I realized that Fossum is actually a close cousin to Ruth Rendell - I plowed through Rendell for a while until I realized, one nut is much like another nut - the inverse of Tolstoy's happy family truism. I like the approach Fossum takes — I think it appeals to my left-leaning tendencies. Inside it, Sejer finds a postcard bearing a short message: Hell begins now. I found this book almost on the sick side per being about someone doing gruesome acts to total strangers. Then, just before midnight, somebody rings his doorbell.

Karin Fossum is who she is - she writes offbeat quiet books about oddballs with compassion and yadayadayada. I do not like series much, because at some point they become minor rewrites of the same book. Like most Norwegian authors, she is brief and to the point. A terrible foreboding came over her. Johnny is equally adamant that letting the dogs out had not been down to him. Light and tender, the meat let go easily, and she succumbed to the temptation to stick a piece in her mouth. Per anyone else who might find the same objections - were this their first book by Fossum, I would expect them never to read another. But it is the exquisitely planned plot which makes this novel an exceptional one: the impossible-to-guess double-twist ending left me gasping in shock. They both laughed because she was wearing the oven gloves; he had that look she loved so much, that teasing look she could never resist.
Started at 9 ended at 9. This is another Inspector Sejer novel, and him and his junior partner Jacob Skarre are entertaining characters. She is an amazing writer!
